When you're in the process of going through labor or trying to go through labor, you should be on an empty stomach. Induce labor is a method that the doctors/nurses use to assist you in getting frequent contractions and to dialate you to 10cm to have your baby now. After 40 weeks pregnant, doctors using induction to get the baby out before anything dangerous happens. Even if you're being induced, you can definately have a natural birth. However, after a certain amount of time and if the doctor sees that you and the baby are at risk, then they will prepare you for a cesarean. If you can't handle pain, I would suggest that you get an epidural to reduce the pain.

I don't know if there is an average time...but from my experience and that of family and friends...baby is born about 6-8 hours after pitocin is started. But this can be different for everyone. Is it more painful??? Well...once you go into labor...I don't think it really matters..it is all painful! But, I do recommend an epidural! When your labor is induced, you are making your body do something that it is not ready to do. Induction can cause the contractions to come on very hard and one on top of the other...giving you little or no time for rest. In my case, by the time it came to pushing..I was exhausted! With an epidural, you can relax and your body isn't all tense. For me, it made the recovery easier because my body didn't hurt all over from tension pain.
Good Luck and Congratulations!!

I was induced with all four of my children. Being induced is not painful at all. They will give you a iv with pictocin in it and then the labor will begin. With my first Daughter I was induced and my labor was 5 hours and my second 7 hours my third 5 hours and my fourth 3 hours so it depends on the woman and the baby on how long it takes. I was induced and went natural no pain meds at all. I recommend natural because you recover faster. And the labor s usually a little quicker going natural.

How far dilated are you? Is it your first? This could make a big difference. When I was induced, I was about 2 cms dilated. They inserted cervadil near the cervix (looks like half an aspirin) to soften it. For me, this was all that was needed to jumpstart my labor. Some women will also need pitocin to help move their contractions along. I have heard that this does hurt worse than natural labor, but I also know that dr's are much more cautious now in how they administer it. They now realize that they need to start off slow with small doses to give your body a chance to adjust.
For me, cervadil was inserted at 9 in the morning and contractions started on their own at 5 pm. However, this was also my 3rd baby. It can take a while, be sure to bring things to do, you will go insane waiting if you don't.
If you are dilated enough (say 4 cms), you could ask them to just break your water. I had this done with my 2nd, and it was all that I needed to start labor.
Good luck!

Being induced just starts the labor process to happen. The doctor or nurse will put something like pitocin inside you, causing the cervix to dialate quicker. It is still a natural birth. I was induced - my first baby, and I was in labor for 23 hours. So, it could be short or long. The more children you have the quicker the labor and delivery should be each time. Good luck!

Induced labor isn't much different from natural except that the inducing drug is controlled by the medical staff. Time for birth will still depend on your body and the baby. The nice thing about inducing labor is--if labor continues for very long, the medical staff can slow the drip and let you get 5-15 mins rest if they feel you need it.

It could take a few hours or it could take all day and night. There is no way of knowing exactly how long your labor will last. If the break your water then they will probably only allow you to go 12 hours after they break your water because you ruin a risk of infection after the water has been broke. If I were you going into this and I have been there I would eat a very light brakfast before going into the hospital because you will not be allowed to eat until after you have delivered. I know they told you not to but you could be there all day long with out anything to eat.
Good Luck and Best of wishes on the new bundle of JOY

Maybe you will get lucky, And the baby will chose his/her own birthday and they won't have to induce! :-)
I went in to be induced at 42 weeks, And was dilated to 4cm when I got to the hospital that morning, And they let me decide whether or not I wanted to start a Pitocin drip or try walking the halls to progress labor on my own, I chose the latter...And had him w/out being induced. :-)
I've heard from just about everyone (Read some of the questions on here about induction, And the answers the ladies have given) -anyway, I've heard that it is VERY painful to be induced.
Whatever happens- Best of luck, and congrats on the new baby!!!!

It all depends on your body, but if your water breaks and you haven't had the baby within 24hrs of it breaking you're Dr usually schedules for a C-Section to prevent infection and secure the baby's safety! I have many friends that have been induced and had the baby within only a few hours... Good Luck! & Congrats!

I was induced with my son (on my due date), and I went without the epidural. Labor and deliver total (for me) was 3 hours. But, not every woman will have the same experience with induced labor. I wish you the best of luck with your new baby!!
