These 2 (Dutch language) sites put the number at roughly 500,000... of which roughly 10% are stolen each year :-/

Hi, I'm Dutch and a bike-rider, as we all are.

Fact: there are more bikes than cars in Amsterdam, because every Dutch person has AT LEAST one bike.

Not everyone has a car, but many people have more than one bike (like me). One old bike for going to the city center or for going out at night (no to much heartbreak when it gets stolen), and one good, pretty bike for taking a nice ride (that I would never park out of my sight).

Bikes are so important here, we have our own lanes in the street and we have bike-parking lots:

do not comprehend what you recommend by technique of highway bike. Mountain motorcycles with their uncovered bits and products do not very last in a antagonistic ecosystem like Amsterdam so as that they are not as difficulty-loose as "typical" motorcycles and human beings do not park 'm on the line as a lot. one component I have said is that an ever increasing type of motorcycles have a plastic crate lashed at the front

Probably as many as there are people because it is the best way to get around this wonderfully compact city.

HUNDREDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But it´s ok, as there are wonderful bike lanes; just try to be away from their lanes, as they are really aware that it is THEIR lane! Also, lots of places to park them
