Are seals the same as exhaust valves?

Yes, engine has to be removed and no not the same.

I have changed the seals in an engine without removing it from the vehicle, but to be honest; it would have been easier if I had of removed it. It really depends on the engine. If it is the type of engine that has a one piece seal in the back of the crank, then you have to remove the transmission to get to it. As far as the front seal; it can be changed without removing the engine, but everything in the front has to be removed to get to it. The exhaust valves are what lets the exhaust (spent gases) out of the engine and into the exhaust pipes. You may be thinking of the valve stem seals, or valve seals as they are called. You can pump the cylinders up with air pressure to hold the valve up, and change them without removing the head. A lot of the time many people will think an engine needs seals because it is slinging oil out of it, but in a lot of cases, it's nothing more than a bad pcv valve. They are pretty cheap and easy to change, and should be changed about every 3-4 months. When they are bad; it allows pressure to build up inside the crankcase, thus forcing oil out of the seals, making them appear to be bad. I hope I have helped you in some way. Good Luck!!!

There are about twenty different seals on an engine. If you're using a lot of oil, but not leaking any, you're probably talking about intake valve seals. You don't have to pull the engine to replace those.

First of all ,no seals are not the same as exhaust valves.
Second, engines have different kinds of seals. You don't have to remove it to replace any of them , but some of them can be replaced easy if the engine is out.

You must be thinking of valve stem seals. The head at least has to come off. Personally, I like to take the engine out and put it on a stand, it sure is easier to work on and you can do a lot better job than trying to bend over the fenders.

it depends on which seals need to be replaced. the engine will need removed if the rear crank seal needs replaced. but other than that, you do not need to remove the engine.
