Can anyone tell me how a baby's blood type is determined. I know it's a mix of genetics, but I 'm looking for a more detailed answer. For example, what type does it take to give a baby O+ when the mom is A+.

And what is the rare or special blood type that can be given to anyone if using donated blood.

My father was O+ and my mother B+, I'm AB+, have a brother the same and another brother O+.

Everyone has 2 genes for the A/B-system and several for the rhesus factor (but there is generally only determined between pos. or neg.). The "0"-gene is recessive, so the combination of A-gene with 0-gene results in A blood type. Each parent gives one of his two genes for A/B.
Example: father A0 (blood type: A) and mother A0
possible combinations for children : 25% AA (blood type A), 25 % 00 (blood type 0), 50% A0 (blood type A)
Example 2: father 00 (blood type: A) and mother AB
possible combinations for children : 50% A0 (blood type A), 50% B0 (blood type B)
Rhesus is easier, it's either the mother's or the father's type (50:50)
Universal donors (very frequent question) ist 0 negative!!!

They have do a blood typing (Serum contains anti-A and anti-B antibodies to a blood sample. The presence of clumping will determine the blood type)
O is the universal donor and AB is the universal receiver. You must also put the Rh factor into perspective too.

I agree with Freddie the only way to get O blood type is having two O alleles one from each parent. If one parent is AB they could only have an A, a B or AB not O.. If you do Check the mailman he might have been delivering more than mail.

the genetic traits of the parents blood type would have to be known.
ex if mom is AA and dad is BB then their children will be AB>
if mom is AB and dad is AB then their children will be AA, BB, or AB
if mom is AO and dad is OB then their children will be BO, AB, OO,or AA

the combinations are based on dominate traits most come blood type is O and the lowest percent is AB.
O is recessive but most people carry at least one gene for it. % very with race

You would have to be AO - as the A is dominant. The dad could be B (in which case he would have to be BO) or he could be O (as O is recessive, so you need two O's to show up as O). The baby would then take one O from each parent.

To the person who answered whose father is O and they are AB -I don't think he's your bio dad, as he could onlly give you an O - so you got the A from someone else.

B+B=B
A+B= AB+ or O+
O+ an be given to A+, B+, AB+ & O+
O+annot be given to O- or any negative for that matter.

Dad needs any O type.
