My husband and I are looking to book a holiday in one of the Greek Islands next July/August time.
We like to relax with good resturants and bars, we like the beach but a nice hotel with a pool is also a must.

Has anyone got any suggestions? We are not sure which place to go to - help!

I would recommend the island of Santorini. Very different, with outstanding beauty, amazing restaurants with view in the sea, the volcano and the sunset and many hotels with pools in very high standards. I went there with my fiance and it is the best if you want to relax but also to be able to socialise.
The history of this island is also interesting and the shape of the island is weird because of a volcano explosion which sent half of the island under the sea.
What i liked most is the view of the sunset! The best I've ever seen and believe i have travelled a lot around the world.
Nice holidays!

I'm afraid you will not be able to relax if you visit some island mid-July or August, unless you stay in an all-inclusive hotel.

Favourite destinations for foreign visitors are the islands of Corfu, Rhodes, Crete, Santorini and Mykonos.

I would suggest you contacted your travel agent for ideas, then come back to Yahoo! Answers: I'm sure that all people usually answering the questions referring to Greece, would be more than happy to help make your final decision.

I strongly recommend Rhodes. The island which was created by the sun god Helios, who still really cares for it, giving it eternal sunshine. I've been there two years ago and fell in love with the island!
There are plenty hotels like those you're desribing, just choose. In Rhodes one finds everything a traveller can ask for. One can feel history with every step they take, just think of the Rhodes Collosus - one of the seven wonders of the world. The night life is excited (especially in the capital, Rhodes Town) - and I'm not talking only about bars and discos, but about fun in general. Here's something tourists love to take part in; so called "greek evening" organised by the travel agency, which means you're taken to a typical greek villange, where you eat national meals (the greek cuisine is really delicious:) and dance greek dances... great fun, something you musn't miss when in Greece.
Local beaches are really beautiful, but you must choose properly where to go; the western coat is influenced by the Egean sea, which means the water is cold; on the other hand the sea of the eastern coat - the Mediterranien - is warm with sandy beaches.
Don't know wherher you'll decide to go there, but if you do I swear you will never foget Rhodes, the Rose, just like me!:-)

While I've never visited many of the Greek islands (I've been to Crete, Santorini, Tinos, and Mykonos), the one place that fits that description quite well is Hersonissos, Crete. We stayed at the Terra Maris resort there, and it was amazing. It's about 100 meters from the Aegean Sea, has several swimming pools, is a gorgeous hotel, and is located in a town with plenty of seaside restaurants and bars.

I've also heard great things from a friend who vacationed in Corfu, and I enjoyed the plentiful clubs in Mykonos and the picturesque views in Santorini.

Missy,

If you genuinely like the Greek islands, then I would suggest going to Leros in the Dodecanese. From here you can easily catch a catamaran or a hydrofoil to take you to Kos, Rhodes, Patmos, Kalymnos, etc.

Leros itself is a beautiful green island with lovely views, good walking, plenty of nice beaches and lots of restaurants and tavernas to go to. There is also a small airport on the island with one daily flight to and from Athens, so its easy to get to.

If you want an excellent 4-star hotel with swimming pool, sauna, gym, sea views, etc then I would suggest the Crithoni's Paradise Hotel. We've stayed there a number of times and it is lovely. They've just had a bit of re-vamp as well, so I think its closer to 5 star now, but still a very economic rate. Their link is attached.

Greece has to many places to go, to many islands ....
A tour operator can help but if you want to save money find a greek friend to help.... tourists pay higher prices on hotels....
a local person can get you a very good price at a hotel...
plus eat were the Greeks go.... much cheaper....
Plus July/August is high season.....you will pay a higher ticket, hotel, rent a car for this period plus its hot....
Best time to go would be June or after August....

it depends... i am greek and i usually look 4 the same things as u

i would ropose a large island not far from athens
the advantages a large island has, is that u can have anything from a real relaxed lifestile to a more extreem...

i've been to most, so i'd propose PAROS island, which has many things to do,nice beaches, and is big enough 4 u to find organized tourist atractions, but also original and virgin local diversities and beaches, tavernas etc...

else, Mykonos and Santorini are very romantic, but they r stuffed and too touristic

3rd choise crete... it's huge (by greek standards) and has everything..

have a nice holliday

We have been holidaying in the Greek Islands for 20 years, never returned to a resort and never had a bad hoilday. The choice is yours.
Our first holiday was in Sidari - Corfu. Nice big beach. Am told that it is now quite lively.

Rhodes is fabulous, we have been twice now and plan to go again in 2008 to get married at the Filerimos Monastery. Rhodes old town is full of restaurants as is Lindos which is beautiful and has an acropolis built around the same time as the one in Athens.

atlantica princess is a good all inclusive hotel not too far from rhodes town
