You can buy grass seed that is specifically for the winter. I live in Indiana as well and I just put my seed out this past weekend. I tilled the bare spots using a tiller first. Then spread the seed. You'll need to cover the seed with hay to keep birds and animals from eating it all.

Bermuda and rye grasses need a cold snap to grow. Our county extension agent says that October is the LAST chance - in South Texas - to plant grass for the spring since it needs time to germinate to be able to come back in spring.

If you are in Southern Indiana, you will want drought tolerant. Perennial rye is good for sun and fine fescue for shade. I have better luck planting in the fall[ oct-nov] but any time will work with plenty of watering .avoid plantingJune thru August tho. keep seeds moist but not wet till 3-4 inches high and do not mow till at least 3 -4 inches high. tall fescue is clumpy and bluegrass is tempermental in the hot months. Contact your county extension agent for your best choices.

It depends of what kind of grass you are sowing. Is it a warm season or cool? Many native grasses can be easily sowed in fall for spring growth.
