it just refers to a more distant time and period in your past, not your immediate past. So you wouldn't use "back in the day" if you're referring to something that you experienced last month. However, if you refer to a period of time in your past, like when you were in high school if you're in your twenties or college if you're older or before you got married or before you moved out of your parents home, then it would be appropriate to use the phrase.

When a person generally was having the most fun being young.When you saysomething to them they think back to a time in their life when they did this and say back in the day.Or the time in life they enjoyed this thing the most.Or least.

It's kindsa like saying "Once upon a time...." a way to say "when I was younger....." or "When I was growing up...."
