Weathering is the effect of weather on an object. A weathered rock for instance would be well rounded from rain, wind etc. Weathered wood would be dark, old etc.
Does this help?

Affected by weather. That means rocks eroded by wind and rain, with some part dissolved over time, and so on. If you dig a rock from underground, it will have been protected from the weather by the earth above before, but once exposed, it will start being affected by the elements.

Weathering is an aging and decomposition process that takes place as a result of natural exposure. It's called "weathering" because the primary forces are wind, rain, sunlight, heat and cold (separately and in cycles).
Secondary effects can also be pictured, as when wind blows across sand and picks it up, then blows the sand against something else.

weathering is the breaking down of rocks
well theres physical weathering, chemical weathering and biological weathering:
Physical weathering- the breakdown of rock physicaly (like abration, two rocks hitting the surface of each other grinding)
Chemical weathering- the process by which rocks are decomposed, dissolved or loosened by chemical processes
Biological weathering- includes the effect of animals and plants on the landscape. This is more than roots digging in and wedging rocks. Biological weathering is the actual molecular breakdown of minerals.

I'm guessing it is akin to erosion, or the effects of the weather. For example, the New River Gorge in WV is the effects of the New River carving its way tover the land, wearing away the rocks. Also, some of the rock faces have been caved by the wind, and water freezing and cracking the faces.
