I think part of the whole "Halloween feeling" has to do w autumn. I have lived abroad for several years and I just can't get excited about Halloween like I used to when I was at home in the US. Where I'm from it's cold at night, the wind howls, the ground is covered w leaves (that make a wonderful scary sound when the wind blows them about). It was fun to wear a costume and traipse through neighborhoods in the dark. All the houses were lit up and you'd see little groups of various kids moving through the shadows. There was always the curiosity of seeing what other kids were wearing and what the inside of all these strange houses would look like.
There's also the pre-Halloween ritual of choosing a pumpkin (sometimes you pick them yourself at a pumpkin farm) and carving it into a jack-o-lantern. Those plastic kind just don't cut it.
For older kids there were parties, heated apple cider, candied apples, hayrides, haunted houses. And costumes.
Where I live now, however, it's too hot to wear a costume, mask, or weird makeup. And if everyone isn't doing it then it just isn't that fun. If it's not cold outside then it's not fun for me.

To answer your question...halloween is a tradition that we americans celebrate. Really all it is eatting sweet foods (just what americans need) and scaring the crap out of others. the basics of halloweens are making your house scary...or cute like some people do...dressing up in costumes to scare people and/or look cute...and go door to door and get candy...thats all halloween it. Need more information...im sure http://www.wikipedia.org will have some

One of two reasons:

Commericalized reason - to dress up and get candy - Halloween

The original reason - to celebrate the last of the harvest, to honor the dead and to bring on the new year. - Samhain (pronounced Sow-en)

I, being Pagan, celebrate Samhain but I still love to give out candy to the kiddos.

I don't know why Austrailians don't celebrate it. It's not part of the culture I guess. No big deal. A majority of the world doesn't celebrate is so.....
