Good choice! I'd stick to something caused by bacteria or viruses since a lot of diseases caused by them are well characterized. Ebola is definetly something that's interesting (AND SCARY), you could also do Tuberculosis (TB) which is a MAJOR problem in underdeveloped countries. 1/3 of the world's population is infected with TB and 1.3 million people die of it every year. The reason it's such a problem is because treatment lasts for 6 months and you have to take the antibiotic Ethambutol EVERY DAY during that 6 months...try explaining that to people without an education...that's why it's so prevalent in underdeveloped countries!
If you're interested in that, the bacteria that causes it is Mycobacterium tuberculosis. There's a LOT of literature on it.

Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria syndrome- an "accelerated aging disease".
It causes rapid aging. A child who is 6 looks like he's 67.
There is no known cure. Most people with progeria die around 13 years of age. Below is a link to images of those affected with it.

Microcephalic primordial dwarfism, also called Sekel Syndrome or bird-headed dwarfism. I saw a documentary about a little Candadian girl who had this. She was incredibly cute and TINY, it was very interesting.
