It's already chilly, but a cold front is coming in. Luckily the rain will let up for the evening hours for trick-or-treating. But I will be taking a little Batgirl with me. I don't want to ruin her costume by hiding it under a coat, so I think I will make her wear thermal underwear, tights, and a turtle neck underneath her costume. Will you make your kid wear a coat if it is freezing? What else can you do without ruining the costumes?

Your idea is the best way to go-- thermals and a turtleneck. The best way to go in any event, I believe, is to have a costume that can be worn with warm undergarments or dressed down underneath to be cooler if the weather is warm. If that isn't possible, have two costumes-- a warm weather idea and a cold weather idea. For example: your child may want to be a pixie, but the costume will not keep her warm in chilly weather, so you have a back up costume of butterfly with wings and antennae worn over a black turtleneck and pants, with thermals underneath. It's also a good idea to collect a lot of costume pieces for kids, and get as many as possible that will grow with them. I have a whole chest-of-drawers full of great items. I wore many of them when I was little. My nieces often wear them now. My nephew likes the unisex ones, like werewolf masks and capes. Plus, I'm putting together a few things for him to wear at home, his own chest of costumes, or a start.

Under the costume... Dress your children warm and if necessarily wear a coat under the costume. Go out in short spurts and come back home to warm up if necessary... Have fun and Happy Halloween!

My Daughter will be dressed very warm with her hat, mittens, long underwear and her coat. I don't mind the whole costume not being able to be viewable verus having a sick kid for the next week!! Good Luck and HAPPY HALLOWEEN.

We usually put extra sweaters under the costume or if their jacket fits under the costume we can do that also.
