I have to cut up my food very small and make sure that I chew it thoroughly before I swallow. Three times in the last year, I've swallowed the food too soon and it's blocked my airway. I've managed to keep calm and force it out myself. The last one scared me, because I couldn't catch any breath at all.
Now, I'm finding it difficult to swallow when I'm drinking out of a bottle (small water bottles). When I tip my head back, my throats virtually shut. As for taking pills .. forget it! They jam before they're even in swallow position!
Has anyone any idea what causes this?

It is probably caused by an esophageal stricture aka narrowing in the esophagous. You need to see the doc and he will refer you to someone who can do what is called esophageal dilitation aka stretching of the esophagous. The numb the throat/esophagus before they do this proceedure so you don't feel it. It is done as an outpatient proceedure and is quite common. My dad had to have this done and many of the residents I see at the nursing home I work at have had it done. See your doc and get this taken care of.

If you haven't seen a doctor, do so Immediately! I watched my husband waste away and die from esophagel cancer. His first hint was difficulty swallowing. It had invaded his stomach by the time he saw a doctor. That's the worst news it could be, but you could have a simple problem with your esophagus, that is treatable. My daughter had Lap-band surgery to lose weight. She has to cut her food very small, chew long and eat little, or else food sticks in her throat or comes back up.

Please seek help for your problem. Life's too precious.

I also have a problem swallowing and have found that pills will go down easier....even big ones....if I grease them up with butter, place it carefully on my tongue and take a drink of cold water, they will glide right down. Sounds crazy, but it works with horse pills, like antibiotics for instance.

Again......Please see a doctor!

must be the start of a chilly/flu. If he has submit nasal drip he gets a sore throat. I had the comparable component 2 weeks in the past no different symptom yet a sore throat. I went to the Dr. because of the fact i presumed I had strep. Nope, it replaced into submit nasal drip and that i've got been given a terrible chilly some days later. If he would not fall unwell in some days then it would additionally be seasonal hypersensitive reactions beginning. Any form of decongestant would be help.

okay you cant swallow unless its mashed up, okay if i was you and i know its imbrassing but i would go to the doctors and ask your doctor about this problem. i occiasionally get it and i found out that i did have enough sliever in my mouth to swallow. so drink plenty of water. and i am also asthmatic so that doesnt help. i dont know what causes it maybe u have less sliever than some people as i said before but the best bet is to go to the doctors they are the prefessional and they would explain why you have this problem. and when your out explain to the people your with they will / should respect you for confinding in them.

I think it's called Dysphagia. How about thickening the liquids so they are more manageable. Try Nutilis to do that.
On the other hand your friends should have more understanding and patience. Unless they want to pick you off the floor after choking. Talk to a speech and language therapist as it more in their field than a Doctor and explain the problem.

If it's getting worse I would get it checked out with a neurologist. You can get a referral to one. I work on a Neuro floor and we see this all the time with certain diseases. It could be something minor, and it could be serious, but I would certainly check it out.

Please consult Speech Pathologist trained in Dysphagia.
Modiifed Barium Swallow (MBS) should be conducted on you to understand oral, pharyngeal and esophageal functions during swallow. MBS is non-invasive and simple Radiological test.

Swallowing difficulty is one of the first indicators of neurological insult. So please hurry. Good News!! It can be corrected.
Best wishes from,
A concerned Speech Pathologist
