A variety of reasons. Due to better nutrition, quality of living, and fitness programs, people are simply stayinfg active and fit longer than ever and also of course living longer. The baby boom generation is hitting their 50's now and they are going to change the whole concept of retirement. Instead of slowing down and waiting to die these boomers are going to be more active than any retired generation before them, and thus retirement communities will offer a ton of activities and be more like resorts.
As far as getting into golf? Why not? They've had their whole lives to practice--and this is due in part to unprecedented affluence for their generation, as golf is an expensive game! ALso there has never before been so much material out there to learn and improve golf: lessons, TV, videos, books, etc. So bottom line: some of these guys are just looking at it like a great way to spend their Golden Years. Plus--the money can be good! Indeed, guys like Tiger Woods make more money in a single year than a Ben Hogan or Arnold Palmer did in a career!
