Personally, as a white human being, I have much respect for Mr. MLK. For you to generalize "white people" is racist and offensive. The only holidays, other than Halloween, that this white human being celebrates with gifts and such is the birth of my Lord and Savior and my own birth-as well as my family's birth. I do not give nor receive gifts or have a "celebration" for Thomas Jefferson's, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington's , etc. (to be exact-these president's birthdays are now put all together into one day, president's day in February). Therefore, the fact that Mr. MLK has his own day is very special, and for good reason. How about we all stop talking about what other races are NOT doing and DO something about it ourselves? Or, would that be too much work- since it is easier to sit back and complain.

James J answered this so well. I agree completely. I think MLK Jr was inspiring and a truly wonderful man. Unfortunately his life was cut short. When that happened Jesse Jackson stepped in and he has twisted a whole lot of what MLK Jr. did. I have read where many black activists have said that Jesse Jackson set the black back decades with his tirades and showy crap. He is said to be (by many black) more interested in boosting himself up than he is the black community.
We are all equal and we should be treated as such. That starts with you and I treating each other (regardless of race or religion) being respectful of each other.
If it matters, I am white.

I think if MLK, Jr. was alive today and read your question he'd think ... "I marched and spoke for the freedom of my people (and others) and all they can ask is this question about gifts and candy!!!" I think your question should be ... what can we all do to make MLK, Jr. Day bigger and better than Halloween or Christmas (I think those are the holiday's you're referring to). Look what is happening in Africa ... let's help those people!
Also, the whole month of February is Black History Month ... that in itself is great! Stop bashing white people and look at yourself and start making a difference. One day ... we will all be treated equally! But it has to start today!!!!!

Since the issues that he marched for didn't mean as much to the whites (as a whole) as it did to the black community - it won't ever be as big of a deal to most of them. It's sad but when a group of people don't have a personal connection to something they usually don't do anything to memorialize it. That's not just a black/white thing, it's a human nature thing.
As for the comment on candy or presents - those are for holidays that have nothing to do with equality. Dr. Martin Jr. is known for race equality. There are plenty of people that aren't Christian or white that celebrate Christmas and Easter traditions.
It just depends on what is personal or important to people as individuals.

White people would care about Dr. Kings day more if black people would Actually embrace Dr. Kings Ideals,- Rather than just assuming they should be treated differently because they were at such a disadvantage for years and years. The state of blacks in the US will begin improving again when Dr. Kings words are not just repeated, but taken to heart.

My daughter is white and takes off every year to be with her son, a mixed child. In today's day and age we should not worry so much about black and white but more about the person themselves.Find the good in everyone and God will smile at you.

sad but true. i agree with you that the white community does not pay the respect deserved. not that all white people do not. i myself and many other feel that we do. however as a whole it is only the blakc community that shows respect to MLK and the things he has done for our society.
