I'm doing a paper on Marketing and I need to know if the "average person" (no offence intended!) knows what Proximity Marketing is. I am trying to gather this information in various ways and thought YA was a great place to get some feedback. Do you know what is and how it works? Will you give me a simple example? Best answer gets 10 points! Thanks!

I don't KNOW what it is, but from it's name, I'm guessing it would be advertising something near something related to it? If so, it should be effective.

hmmm. checked wikipedia. Seems I'm wrong. don't think it would work with me: I get hostile when someone rings my cell for no reason, and for advertising, it would make me VERY hostile!

As an Advertising and Public Relations professional. I do know what proximity marketing is. It is pretty cool although some consumers might not like it as we are bombarded by marketing so much in our lives as it is.

Proximity marketing is the wireless distribution of advertising when in a particular place. Cellular is the big one and now with bluetooth technology it is increasing.

It allows advertisers to target specific groups of people in a particular location, such as a tourist hot spot. For instance a person with a number registered outside the local cellular area might be sent an advertisement for a concert in the area.

Wow! Am I ever dumb. I have no clue. At least I will get the two points, right? Proximity suggests closeness. Does it have anything to do with marketing in a specific area or neighborhood? I will be sure to check back and see who gets the ten points AND the right answer!

Yes, I wrote an article about it here http://www.m-trends.org/2006/10/proximity-marketing.html

Hope this helps; mainly proximity marketing is a term used within the mobile marketing sector.

Cheers,

Rudy

Proximity marketing is the localised wireless distribution of advertising content associated with a particular place. Transmissions can be received by individuals in that location who wish to receive them and have the necessary equipment to do so.

well i would assume that since proximity means near or close and marketing means buying and selling then i would guess it would be buying or selling within a certain area or range

I really dont know but imagine it might be marketing techniques sent out to individual stores based on needs of their surrounding areas rather than based on national trends.
