we are expecting our first child feb 3, and i have registered for a set of Avent bottles... some of the mothers looking over my registry are strongly against this brand. i am wanting to find out what others' preferences are and why. should i get more than one brand to try? i plan on breastfeeding until i have to return to work after maternity leave, and then i will pump.

Avent bottles are a great system!!! If you return to work and want to pump you should get an avent pump. Even the dissposable avent products you can use to pump into, store and feed your baby from. The nipples are all interchangable. The bottles are second best to the Dr. Brown's bottles. I think you made a great choice.

Do not buy these bottles. When my son was a newborn he had a horrible time with the Avent bottles. These bottles are suppost to be good for colic, but they only made it worse for my son. On top of that you have to learn how to put the lid on just right or they leak everywere. Don't waste your money, or someone elses get the Dr. Brown Bottles and Walmart also has a bottle called Parent's Choice which work about the same as the Dr. Brown ones. My second choice would be the Playtex nursers with the laytex nipples. These bottles work great and are a lot easier to clean then the Dr. Brown ones. If you would like to find out more about these bottles you can go to www.epinions.com. In your post it said that you are planning on breastfeeding. Dr. Brown has just come out with a breast pump also. I'm not sure how well it works, but if it is anything like the bottles you are in good hands.

I use AVENT only, and the only reason is because they can be sterilized in the microwave if you get the avent microwave system. As for the actual bottle itself..no I am not a fan, the bottles leak all over the place half the time, and so you need to be extra extra careful to make sure that you screw the lid on properly otherwise they will leak out in a steady stream all over your baby, also they are hard to suck milk out of for my baby so half the time she will refuse the nipple on the bottle half way through her feed. I will stop using avent once I do not have to sterilize bottles.

My son is 5 months and we have been using Avent bottles since he was born. He does just fine with them and I really liked them. They are so easy to clean and thats a major plus when you dont have a lot of time to spend washing bottles!

Yes they are pricey but I think they are worth the price. Other posts suggested that these bottles leak. Yes I have had them leak because the nipple has to be just right. However its not a constant thing that you have to battle at every feeding maybe just a few here and there and I didn't think they leaked that much. Just rescrew the lid and usually that does the trick.

I would recommend Avent bottles!

Avent bottles are a GREAT choice for a mom who plans to combine breast and bottle. Why are those looking at your registry objecting? Because they are a little expensive? YOU are the one who will be using them. Ask for what you want. The shape of the Avent nipple is really good for a breastfed baby and most BF babies will go back and forth well with an Avent nipple.

I used this brand for 7 months because I was pumping full time for my twins. Supposedly, they are the best for breastfed babies because they are designed to mimic breastfeeding.

Pros:
-easy to clean because of the wide mouth.
-I loved the cap design. The caps stay on tight and you don't need to take the cap off to take the nipple/ring off of the bottle.
-The wide bottles were easier for my girls to hold which was a huge plus when they were learning to hold their own bottles.
-We had no problems with colic/excessive gas.

Cons:
-The spills. Every once in a while for some reason the ring/nipple wouldn't go on the right way dumping ounces and ounces of milk. It never failed to spill all over the baby who is then soaking wet, very hungry, and very mad because now she has to wait while you change all of her clothes, heat up a new bottle, etc. I thought I was alone in this until I started reading other people's blogs about the Avent bottles. And, when you're pumping breastmilk is like liquid gold and it's so sad/frustrating to watch it spill.

-expensive. If you're breastfeeding you'll probably want to keep the baby on slow flow nipples until you wean. This means that you'll have to purchase additional slow flow nipples for any bottles that come with the "wrong" flow rate. Those nipples are pricey.

We switched to Playtex Vent Aire which a friend recommended. It was a costly switch (after spending all that $$$ on the Avent bottles) but worth it!

I used Dr Browns bottles with my daughter and was totally pleased. I expressed my breast milk for 13 months and put it in the Dr Browns bottles, which cut down on colic, gas, spit up and burping. Some people complain about it being so many parts to clean but it only has 2 extra parts and thats the tube and the tubes lid, that cuts down on everything. I used the avent b4 Dr Browns and was not pleased, but this is just my opinion U can go to www.handi-craft.com to read about the bottles. I used them last time and with this baby that is due in a few weeks I will express my milk and put it in the Dr Browns bottles again. Good luck!!

1 more thing as far as breast pumps Ameda or Medela would be ur best choice, I used Ameda the first time but this time I will use Medela bcuz I pump ALL THE TIME (no putting on the breast)every 2 hours and the Medela pump is said to be a real work horse. The Ameda was a great pump but the motor started slowing down after a couple of months and pumping every 2 hours with a motor slowing down was frustrating. Good luck on both the bottle and the pump.

I used and loved Avent with my first baby and plan on using it again with this next baby. They are designed to work well with a breastfeeding baby. And if you plan on pumping after you go back to work you can use an Avent pump and pump directly into an Avent bottle (it worked great for me for the 12 months I pumped at work). Everything Avent is interchangeable...bottles, sippies, pumps, etc. I'm really surprised to hear that your friends are down on Avent...it's a really quality line. Maybe it is the fact that Avent is a little pricier than some of the others, but you get what you pay for. :-)

I am currently using Avent and I have nothing against it. I love the fact that I can purchase everything as a matching set; bottle warmer, bottles and microwave sterilizer. We also bought 2 Avent pacifiers. The nice thing about these pacifiers is that the come with a cap, which prevents dust and dirt if you're putting it in your diaper bag. It is a little more expensive than other brands, but it's worth it.

In your situation I highly suggest going straight to the tommee tippee closer to nature range. The nipple is the closest I could find to the breast, being much softer than the avent. I found with our baby who doesn't take to a bottle very well at all that the closer to nature worked the best. I also tried the ortho nipple from nuk... it worked better than the avent as well. It may be an idea to have several on hand in the first place so you can try them on an as needed basis.
