Need advise on how to go about putting a website into a search engine. Nowsaday most company don waste time doing it, some quoted a very high price for doing so... any advice how to go about doing myself?

You can easily submit your address to them and they will link you. Where you are placed depends on how many visitors you get. The only places paying will get you is on the special side bars or just below the search button, it wont list you amongst all the others. At least for google.. i dont use yahoo. i only use the best.

Your best bet (in my opinion) is to register with Google and read the information they have for Webmasters:
http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en/webmasters/
The short answer is that there is no easy way to push your way to the top of search engines because there are hundreds of thousands of other people who want the same thing.
The Help centre on Google does give advice on how to improve your rating though.

Sure but you need to know two things. First 90% of what you will read on search engine optimization (SEO) on the web (including Yahoo answers!) is crap.
Secondly it's hard work and there are no shortcuts.
