What really was it that caused the Red Sox to self-destruct in August? And what are their chances in '07?

i dont think it was the papi thing... he was gone for a while but we were already struggling... Beckett was a huge disappointment this season... yeah he had a good amount of wins but the era sucked and he couldnt stop giving up the long ball. So many injuries killed the sox. Wakefield going down was huge. But i think the biggest lose was not really cause of stats... i think jason varitek was the reason the sox season went sour. He is an amazing defensive catcher and calls the games BEAUTIFULLY. Teams averaged one more run against the sox per game since varitek was injured.. javy lopez can not call a game and never could! The sox need to address there starting pitching for 07.. papelbon comming to the rotation will be better for his shouler and he will still dominate. They will need a new closer and will address that. They need to get rid of manny. I would love to see Schmidt come to the sox but dont see any big pitcher like that comming in.. there saying the white sox are lookin to trade one of there starters to make room for brandon mcCarthy so there's a chance contraes, garcia, or buerle could be available. LOTS OF OPTIONS! I CANT WAIT TO WATCH!! Sry this was so long but i got in the zone :0)

This is coming from a true Red Sox fan from NY. What happened after the All-Star break was Boston's star players were getting injure one-by-one. Jason Varitek, Trot Nixon, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Jonathan Paplebon (I watched that game when he got injured), Keith Foulke. All their key players that helped them succeed in the first half the season, took a tumble in the 2nd half, and cost the Red Sox the division and the Wild Card. They blew a pretty big lead in the AL East. Then the Boston Massacre with the Yankees winning 5 straight in the series.

The group will fold and circulate to Japan.... What do you assume will ensue? The Rays and Yankees ARE going to the playoffs. The pink Sox will do an identical element they do in line with annum that they do no longer make the playoffs: relax until Spring education.

Francona. He is an undeserving manager of one of the marquee teams in baseball. Very undeserving. He tried like heck to get the Red Sox eliminated in the '04 ALCS...good thing the players knew what they were doing.

Injuries, losing Varitek's command behind the plate, Wake's knuckler, and Nixon's go at it mentality would be the biggest reason. They tried to bring the youth up and proved to themselves most of the Minor league prospects are at least another full year away.

Give me a break - you should be used to the choking that happens after the All Stars!
My son-in-law is a lifetime RedSox fan and he tells me that they always do good until the All Stars and then zip, they are done.

definitely the injuries. jason varitek`s in particular. he is the leader of the team and when you lose your leader you go down hill from there. when he got injured they started to dig themselves in a hole. by the time he came back they were to deep in the hole to do anythin about it. hopefully next year we will have a healthy productive team ;]
