Parents should monitor what their kids are viewing or what games they are playing. At the very least if they let the kid play the violent games then they should talk about it with their kids. Parents should make sure that kids understand that the violence in games is pretend, but violence in reality is a nasty thing. They should discuss games just like they would discuss violence on TV or in movies. Make sure kids understand the difference between games(make believe) and reality.

Parents today just want a "quick fix" they want to kick thier feet up and just assume thier kid is watching something ok on tv or that Mortal Kombat Armegeddon isn't violent. They aren't looking for control, they are looking for someone to blame for thier crappy parenting skills.

The parent's role is to sit down and educate the child that what happens on the game shouldn't reflect what happens in reality. Video games should be an escape from reality, not an idea for it.

the parents role is to but the **** out!!! if kids want to spend they're well earned money on video games they should be able to and if they want to find time to play those games it is they're responsibility to do they're chores homework etc. and then have time to play the video game just like a real adult and they are growing up and need to learn to be responsible.
