You can not rent any trailer no matter what size the hitch is on your car, if you have a class 3 hitch you can not rent any trailer. I had a class 2 hitch with a trailer that only weighed 1200 pounds well within the 3500 pound limit of a class 2 hitch. And Uhaul even lists it right on the contract that you can not tow with a ford explorer so Scottb03gt you are wrong just call uhaul and ask them. and metalshin04 there are several different uhaul trailers not only class 3 trailers

The Ford Explorer and hitch have nothing to do with each other.

Because of the big issue with Ford Explorer's and the Firestone tire fiasco, U-Haul's company policy is that you are not allowed to tow their trailer's with a Ford Explorer. They (The U-haul company) are banning an entire type of vehicle by name alone to limit their liability.

From their web page:
http://www.uhaul.com/trucks/faq.aspx

Ford Explorer owners: U-Haul has chosen not to rent behind this tow vehicle based on our history of excessive costs in defending lawsuits involving Ford Explorer towing combinations. This policy is not related to safety issues. This is an unusual circumstance for U-Haul – we have built our success for over 59 years by saying "yes" to our customers, and do not like saying "no" instead. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are committed to working with our customers to find alternative options to help with their move. Please contact 1-800-GO-UHAUL (1-800-468-4285) for assistance with alternative options.

One thing you want to consider when towing anything especially small to medium trailers is - where is the hitch located? Is the ball attached to the bumper or do you have a trailer tow package (the hitch is attached to the chasis)? If you have a problem with uhaul letting u use their trailer then find another rental place. They have teir rules and specs. for your safety and other people on the road. Keep in mind also, a few years back, Ford Explorers were having blow outs because of the tires that came standard on them and people were loosing their lives. I don't think its so much the vehicle as it is their past problems. Try borrowing a friends vehicle or renting a small uhaul truck to move your stuff the price will probably be cheaper anyway.

I just tried to rent a trailer for my 2001 Explorer 11/13. They still have a no rent policy for any Explorer built before 2011. As of 2011, I was told, Ford widened the wheel base, and that created enough stability that late model Explorers are not excluded from this policy. Apparently there were too many accidents involving Explorers, caused by the narrow wheel base.
