if i just copied a whole sentence from a specific book how do i site the author? I'm not trying to use " ", I want to do it within parenthesis. what is the format?

If you wish to do it within parenthesis, merely use them at the end of the referenced material.

If it is a formal paper the instructor probably is looking for quotations and references to be in the APA format. In APA, a quote of 40 words or more would be handled as a block quote rather than in quotation marks. A block quote is indented 5 spaces from the left, but not treated any differently on the right than a regular paragraph. You should always lead into a block quote with a sentence ending in a colon.

If the quote is less than 40 words then it should be in quotation marks if you are quoting directly. Either way you do it, APA formatting also specifies how you give credit for information you include from other authors.
