Never heard of a motherboard with both DDR3 and DDR2 memory slots, as no such thing exists. Newer motherboards have DDR3, older ones have DDR2. End of story. And NO, you cannot put the DDR2 in, as each type of memory has a different number of pins and the notches on the stick are also in a different position. That's just to prevent brainless morons from shoving the wrong stick in the wrong slot. Just buy more DDR3, it's the cheapest RAM nowadays.

One hopes that the ram stick you put into your pc is appropriately rated for the speed of your mainboard.

If it does match the mainboard's requirements, then all you have to do is put the stick into the slot.

One other note: the mainboard will want you to put two stick of ddr in just the right slots to take advantage of the double data rate, so check with your manufacturer, either the manual on hand or at their web site for the correct slots. If you already have two ddr sticks, then another one will be fine in the remaining slot....

You should just have to plug it in. Is it the same ram as you currently have or are you completely replacing it?

all you have to do is plug it in and turn on the computer. your computer should recognise the memory. once the computer boots.. if you use windows, go to the contorl panel, and click on system to see if it says you have more memory than you did before.
