Put the shoe in a brown paper bag and put in freezer for half hour or so and then the wax should break right off.

several starts on good answers but be careful of the ironing! Brown grocery bags absorb best and you might use a blow dryer instead of an iron. Just press brown paper over wax stains and use blow dryer to warm and melt the remainer after freezing to remove heavy wax spatters. And next time use a snuffer on those candles!
