I know that games that a baby enjoys like peek-a-boo help develop certain skills. Exempli gratia, peek-a-boo develops object permanency (that objects will still be there even when you can't see them).

What other games like this can a newborn/infant play that will develop important, fundamental skills?

I ask because my wife is due in February and being the nerd that I am, I want to be equipped with all the good, brain developing skills so he can be the fighter pilot, football player, and network admin that I want him to be!

Read, read, read!!! Start now reading books to the baby even in the womb! Introducing baby to different textures and sounds is also good for their brain development. Babies learn through play and every day life so have fun with your baby!

Music is a fine way to educate. Read to your child while still in the womb. Continue doing this after birth. Get plenty of rattles and things that have bright colors on them. Explain colors and shapes to your baby early. Use different things around the house and let baby touch them. Texture is what your teaching there. Your child is never too young to learn. Start early, they will then tend to pick things up early.
