If it is connected to the same data cable then taking out the small black plastic at the back side of the hard disk, called jumper will automatically make it a slave disk. If you are connecting it to other data cable then you can make it a slave disk, if there is some other drive (cd drive etc) connected to it. If it is the only disk connected to the cable then it can be a master disk.
In all cases your hard disk must be detected in your BIOS first. Some bios detect it automatically. For others you have to click on run the detect hard disk option. See what is applicable in your BIOS.

You can change the BIOS. However, depending how much more disk space you got and how old your motherboard is, your additional disk space may not show up at all. Reason I say that is because that's exactly what happened to me. The additional disk space that I got was too much for my motherboard because my motherboard was a bit too old to support this much disk space.

Like you said, you may need a change a setting in BIOS, but it could also be as simple as adjusting the 'jumper' on the backside of the hard disk to the correct setting (which more than likely would be 'slave').

When u bought the hadr drive it was bought unformatted. Simply format it using the Disk management tool in the Administrator Tools in Control Panel. Or use Symantec Partition Magic 8.0

if using same ide cable then u require to change jumper settings behind hdd making 1 master and other slave. if using different ide cables then go to bios and click hdd autodetect and it is done.
