Try a retirement home in a low income area of your city. Or maybe a group home for the mentally handicapped.

why would you want to do that?

there's a lot MORE money to be made by selling them to interested parties.

take time to find people that restore them or just buy them.

A good place to get robust information on this is by looking for univercities that offer courses on the restoration of musical instruments (conexions, a careers advice service can advise you of where to find one if you dont' want to trawl through univercitie's websites personally)

whatever state they're in, they (or their parts) are worth something to soemone. dont forget, there aren't many pianos that are even made of real wood nowadays.

another place you can go if you're intent on getting rid of them, is through giving them to an organ repair shop or getting them to pick them up. They'll really appreciate the the wood & the strings.

I can't think of any fireplace repair places right now & i don't know if they'd be interested in the wood but btw(!) that's another use you could have for an old piano, esp in winter. but that would be rather unfortunate for your pocket and the piano, i think.

all the best!

If you go to yahoo groups...there is a freecycle group. I use it all the time. You should type freecycle and the city you are from. Hope that helps.
