Who cares? If you enjoy them, read them! I know people are getting into graphic novels now, too.

Not any more Geeky then reading a book or magazine. Some of the best story's i have read have been Graphic Novels! People who claim it is Geeky probably don't like to read or have never bothered to find a Comic that they can enjoy.

Comic books has evolved as a popular medium for everyone to read. Step into any book store and odds are you'll find graphic novels and manga have it's own section. Reading expands the mind in terms of vocabulary as well as one of the cheapest ways to escape from reality. For those who think reading comic books is a 'geeky thing' cease to amaze how many close minded people are still out there. Read on true believers. 'Nuff Said.

Personaly no matter what sort of hobby a person does there will always be another who will think its strange or "geeky".
I like looking at comic books for art work that goes into the drawrings. I don't think its "geeky" at all.

Not for a moment. I've been reading them for forty years now and I suppose there's an element of them being my soap opera in that I follow these characters are getting on. I still marvel that there are people out there who can produce work of such a high standard on a monthly basis. Most of all, I think it's our society's equivalent of myth. Heroes and villains with great powers; the age old battle of good and evil. Are the stories of the gods of ancient Greece or India, say, so different? Seems like the same stories with different names. I couldn't care less if someone out there thinks it's geeky. It's been one of the greatest sources of pleasure in my life.

Can't stand all airy fairy poncy 'be who you want to be' answers. Of course its Geeky. More than Geeky. A word of advice, bin the comics, get a girlfriend (or boyfriend if that is your thing) and get down the footy or the pub with your mates. Do it now 'cause if you keep reading comics you wont have any mates left.

I agree with the 2nd user who answered. Reading comics will be viewed as a geekey habit by one part of society.
But in order to be able to label this habit as 'geeky', you have to understand what the term refers to.
Here's what the dictionaries say:
"1 : a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake
2 : a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked
3 : an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity "
Let me tell you one thing. Why does 'geek' have to be viewed as a negative thing? There's nothing wrong about being 'an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity' or being an intellectual. If people dislike you, that's their problem. Unless you are causing serious problems to them or having a bad influence over them and over your surroundings, then there is absolutley no reason to change yourself. 'Geek' and 'geeky' are labels given by teens, especially immature ones, and even though it is not exactly obvious, they create these labels because they're jealous.
I know it's hard for teens and children to be 'geeks' these days, but the reactions you receive depend very much on your environment. Unfortunately, most teens are very similar when it comes to accepting geeks, but you should remember that while you are disliked and mocked by the people of your age, you are very appreciated by adults and generally by older, mature people. Therefore you should consider whhat group matters more. My opinion is that no matter what age group you're part of, as long as you judge a person by how much he/she studies and how passionate he/she is abut certain matters, you are not worthy. It's worthless and totally useless to restrain your abilities and actions according to the opinions of the people around you, let alone this type of people.
'Is reading comic books a geeky thing to do?'
Is having preferences and individual opinions a 'geeky' thing to do? No, not at all. If you enjoy reading comics, that's your choice, it's your preference. We are all allowed to have our own preferences, as long as they don't harm ourselves or our environment and have negative influences. Besides, there are lots of genres and types of comics. Don't forget about the people who read hentai manga/porn comics. They are not considered 'geeks', are they now? No, on the contrary, they seem to be highly appreciated by teens....
In conclusion, reading comics is not a geeky thing to do... (the idea actually makes me laugh). But it may be a childish thing to do if you are an adult (or even a teen) and you're discarding all responsabilities and dedicating your whole time to this hobby. Geeky, no, childish, yes, but only in those conditions. It's not worth changing for anyone, especially when you don't have a reason to. Be proud of your 'geeky' features if you have them. People that try living their lives pleasing everyone end up wasting everything. Why should others be allowed to have their own preferences and be proud of them, why others receive negative labels for what they like and how they like?
I'm 16 and I've noticed that I cause various reactions, depending on what groups I interact with. Some of the people my age judge me by the way I talk and think. Some of them admire me and call me smart, some of them mock me and prefer to call me a geek.
But when I see what the opposite of being a geek refers to, I tell myself that no matter how disliked I am by certain groups, it's not worth giving up on my natural abilities and personality features to please some people who are below my level. Below my level only as far as intelligence and generosity are concerned.
Sorry for the rant, but I hate these labels and the way they are so openly used by everyone. By the way, I'm not English, so don't be surprised if you notice any mistakes.
