Anyone that does not think Brian Urlacher is the best linebacker in the league today is just sticking to a team or player the like. Not since Dick Butkus has there been such a dominating player at the linebacker position and that is saying a lot given the great linebackers that have played since.

Derrick Brooks, Shawne Merriman, Joey Porter, Takeo Spikes, Brian Urlacher, Ray Lewis
and maxim6669, uh...Vilma's a middle LB (well, inside LB now that the jets do a 3-4) and he's never led the league in sacks ---tackles yes, but not sacks, and this is only his 3rd year in the league, so leading for 4 years is totally off.
Though not the best MLB, Donnie Edwards is extremely underrated, he is always top 5 in tackles nearly every year (and usually almost always #1 of solo tackles --the only kind that should count)
And, in addition to splitting MLB and OLB, we should split 3-4 OLB and 4-3 OLB, as they have completely different jobs, and require very different body-types.
Derrick Brooks, Takeo Spikes, and LaVarr Arrington are some of the best 4-3 guys, and Joey Porter & Shawne Merriman are some of the best 3-4 OLBs.

Outside linebacker: Shawne Merriman without a doubt.
Middle linebacker: it's between Urlacher and Lewis. I'd go with Urlacher.

This is a good question and I'd like to say that Brian Urlacher is the best I mean come on he's almost 270lbs and can run, and catch as good as any top 10 receiver in the league. But I believe that a middle LB is not the same as an Outside LB. Their jobs are completely different, and require different types of skills to be great. Urlacher is the best MLB hands down, but I got to give the best OLB title to Johnathan Vilma. Vilma lead the league in sack 4 years in a row, and has been one of the very few players to be voted into the Pro-bowl while being on a team with less than a 40/60 win/loss record. It's an amazing feet to be picked as one of the best in your position while being on a losing team, and both Urlacher & Vilma accomplish that every year.

That's something that can be on endless debate. I think something that should be considered is the LB's influence on the team. If you look at the Patriots when they lost Bruschi last year, you could tell they were staggering, as opposed to when the Steelers lost Porter. And it all depends on what kind of system the defense runs. Shawne Merriam is great at sacks, Ray Lewis is great at stopping the run, Brian Urlacher is an all around guy.

Brian Urlacher, no doubt at all. At 258 pounds, he runs the 40 in under 4.6. He single-handedly makes the entire Bears defense even better.

The best LB in the NFL is Takeo Spikes. He's not completely healthy after his season ending injury last season, but he is the best and most talented LB in the NFL, no question. I would love to see him and Ray Lewis fight each other!!! Although, knowing Ray Lewis he would just stab him and get away with murder, again!
