Go to the START menu and hit RUN. Then type MSCONFIG. Pick the STARTUP section and uncheck the thing that you don't want.
I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs. This will clean up a number of things too.
Good luck

Run the msconfig utility. Go to Start, then Run and type in: msconfig
Go to the startup tab
You will see a list of all the programs that are loaded when your computer starts up. Uncheck any that you do not have to have. (Usually you can uncheck them all). If you decide you to need one, you can go back and recheck it.

usually each program has it's owm preferences and defaults as to when it will be opened either automatically or by the user. as in "yahoo" you should be able to go to preferences and/or tools in each program to turn these defaults off or on. some programs automatically open when you start your computer and cannot be turned off because they are intergrated with your operating system, if these programs slow down your computer you may have to delete them and find a better program to use in replace of it, good luck , i hope this is some help to you!!!

go to start > Run> type in msconfig
Then go to the startup tab and you can deselect what you KNOW you don't want. Be careful though because you can shut down vital startup scripts.
