The latest fad in political discussion is to claim that terrorists are watching the US election and hope to influence it in some way.

Which way do they want us to vote so we can do the opposite? Who cares? The debate itself is what they want because these futile attempts to read their minds spread fear and uncertainty. Besides, whatever America does, the terrorists will claim victory.

We should frame debates about whom to vote for not in terms of what the terrorists want, but what will make the world a safer place for Americans.

On election day, my vote is going to anyone who favors the most immediate withdrawal from Iraq and re-focusing the war on terror. Label me how you wish, claim you can read terrorist minds, but those are the things I want, so that’s how I’m voting.

I disagree. These people do watch American elections and attempt to influence them with their actions. The Democrats have painted a portrait that their party will abandon Iraq and try to negotiate with the insurgents. By increasing the body count with an October offensive, the insurgents believe it will create enough anti-war sentiment to get Democrats into power in the House and Senate. They have a historical precident from October 1968 when the Viet Cong launched the Tet Offensive. Though it was a major military defeat for them, the high body count bolstered the anti-war crowd enough that the Democrats nominated a "cut and run" candidate and the Republican nominee (Nixon) only won by promising to end the war.

Your words intend hope for a "world a safer place for Americans." But this is the very problem: the U.S. is doing what it wants in order to protect itself (as it is now in Iraq), and villified for doing so throughout the rest of the world. World peace is the only method of securing American peace. The faster we learn this the better.

As far as what terrorists want from the elections, I think we give them too much credit to think that their leaders are amassed in a giant meeting room - like so may Nazi generals in a confab with the fuhrer. We're political, and we think others are. Al Qaeda is pseudo-religious, and they imagine that others are (They call the Americans "Crusaders", as if they are promoting their religion. Is there anything more fundamentally irreligious and secular than the American military?)

First you have to ask yourself what is a terrorist and why do they hate us so much? I don't know the answers but I'd watch a news show where they talk to jailed terrorists -- they're probably the only safe ones -- and ask just why they hate us so much. If the answer is strictly on religious grounds, then they're no smarter than our own religious extreme rightists. If they have other reasons, I'd be interested in hearing them. Has anyone seen an interview like that?

The want the dems to win because the dems want to leave Iraq thats why the attacks have gone up. Everyone is wondering why the attacks have gone up, but it is right in front of our face. I am not sure why we might give them what they want. Its amazing.
