Expect to pay $50.00 and above for a real pearl necklace. The price of these really fluctuates greatly - some, depending on the quality and place where the pearls were grown or obtained can go as high as hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
If you shop wisely you should be able to get something suitable to your liking for around $100.00 - $200.00 that would be worthy of an heirloom quality necklace.

you can spend as little or as much as you want. I have a strand of pearls I have worn for years I bought at K-mart for $30.
You can spend THOUSANDS on them too.
I would say $800 would get you an excellent strand about 18 inches long. Just depends on what you want.
