Because Greedy Greaseball Brown and the rest of the slimebags keep needing more and more of our money - all this crap about global warming is Manna from Heaven for New McLabour.
It is all cra*p - but these liars wouldn't let the truth get in the way of extorting more tax from us.

The consequences of emitting CO2 are a lot more tangible, better known and a lot less far out in the future than hey were in the 60ies. We are emitting a lot more than we did in the 50ies, thanks to aviation, automobile traffic, power generation, industrial production, all of which there is a lot more of this than in the fifties. Taxation now should not be seen (and not be implemented to seem like) a punishment, but the matter must be addressed, incentives need to be created to wean mankind of petrochemical fuels and coal, if mankind does not want to face the extremely harsh consequences of global warming of more than 3 or 4 degrees. In short - we are able to understand cause and effect now, hence we got to act, good governments should lead the way in an intelligent way (here is an oxymoron to end on a high note).

The point of the tax is to get companies to reduce the amount of CO2 emissions. The goal would be for all countries to reduce their CO2 emissions and that would have a measurable effect on the greenhouse gasses.

to answer the first part of your question:...
....back in the '50's nobody knew anything about 'global warming' or 'CO2 emissions' .... nobody gave any of it a thought, let alone a second thought ......
..... as for reducing the Uk's CO2 emissions ..... I have to back you 100% on this as the majority of the the emissions are now coming from third world countries ..... so why tax us?..... using the left over/out of date/non-green machinery and equipment we no longer want!......

We were too successful so we have to be penalized and let the rest of the world catch up to us in wealth so that when they overrun us, we'll maintain the same living standard we have now. Never mind that under Kyoto, the US would have to add 100 million cars and 500 billion driving miles annually to produce the amount of CO2 Red China was allowed above ours. Only western nations' pollution is bad.

In the 50s we didn't know the effects of CO2 and the damage we were doing.
I'm curious about you assertion that it's all balls. What evidence do you have against the generally agreed scientific consensus? Could you cite a reference?
