You can show your appreciation and support of your colleagues through other ways besides jokes and small talk. Helping them with some work, sending them a thank you via email (instead of face to face if that is causing anxiety) for something they worked with you on, asking them to show you how to do something. . .you can keep it all work related and still be a good colleague.

I am an introvert and became an executive at my company by doing nice things for people and talking to them only about work (often through email only).

You can be introverted and be a manager. You won't be the most charismatic manager in the world, but as long as you know the business, and can communicate guidelines and sound business reasoning behind what you ask.. you should be ok.

Smoking & Joking gets you there part of the way...but at the end of the day.. You really also need to know your stuff...

You have to be able to communicate because that is a necessary managerial skill....if you can't tell jokes.. that's ok.. but if you can't guide a project or someone through talking then you're not going to be a good manager...

There is absolutely no reason that an introvert cannot be a manager or leader! None!

I am the CFO and business manager of a major company in the midwest and, like you, am an extreme introvert (INTJ to be exact).

However, I am not in my current position by giving into my urges to be shy and withdraw. I have had to work exceptionally hard to 'chit chat' with coworkers as well as strangers.

Some other posters made excellent suggestions that I also use in my day-to-day life. Go out of your way to speak with people and introduce yourself, interjecting your thoughts into conversations and making light hearted jokes. Every time you wish to be shy and withdraw push yourself to do the exact opposite. This is very difficult to do at first but after a while it will become easier. Trust me.

Just remember that as a manager you will have to effectively communicate with your charges. Sure, yo ucan send memos out or mass emails but in the end you will accomplish more by speaking with your employees face-to-face. This is where the aforementioned exercise really pays off.

As long as you produce quality work and have a 'can do' attitude with your current bosses you will eventually be given the chance. Best to begin working on your social skills now and prepare for the future.

As for introverts not making leaders. My father is also an extreme introvert. He led men in battle as a commander of Marine infantry and then went on to serve as a Comptroller and Finance Manager for a governement agency, interacting with people all day long. He proved that it can be done.

EXTREME introvert here and have tests to prove it though the tests mean nothing to me, they could of just asked me !! I don't consider being an introvert a bad thing, I am simply happy with myself and can be alone without feeling lonely ! Like the saying goes : " If you are not happy being alone then perhaps it is the company you keep". Many people don't even understand what that means. ha ha ha !!

I managed numerous businesses before having numerous of my own now. I could fake being a social butterfly very well. Its all how well you can act sometimes in the job place !

You can do it !!

Yes. differnt jobs require different personality traits. Some jobs such as bank manager, computer engineer may suit an introvert. However to be teacher or a leader you have be an extrovert.

everything takes practice. you can learn to be social. do one thing every day that you find uncomfortable. memorize a funny joke. invite people to lunch one on one (if you offered to pay no one would refuse).
