I think a tiger would win being that they are solitary animals used to hunting and fighting on their own. Lions hunt as a pack and work together to kill large, strong prey. The tiger would approach with the element of surprise so it would have an advantage from the get go. Also, the tiger is the largest of the big cats, so it has an advantage there as well.

I read an old book somewhere on the Roman gladiator fights of antiquity, that the tiger was a better fighter since it would attack the lion with both front paws, where as the lion would remain on three paws and use only one paw to swat.

I'm not sure how relevant that is, but I hope it helps. Given the tigers' size, and would think that bulk would be helpful to the tiger as well.

An adult lion may be 6 feet long and weigh about 400 pounds. An adult tiger can be 10 feet long and weigh 600 to 700 pounds. No contest. It would be like a fox terrier against a pit bull.

In nature they never challenge each other they are Territorial and they stay within the territory.

They are individuals and by chance they lock Horns they will go back to their territory after a bout or two.

Mostly it will be a shouting match. Tiger is not known for frontal attack, Lions are known to do the frontal attacks only.

Experiment are human created situations only.

the Lion has a better resistance to the tiger's bits, due to its hair around the neck, but the tiger is a bit agile and faster, so I would look to the size of the piece of meat they could be fighting for.
and how hungry they are.....

Lions are significantly bigger and stonger that tigets. I would say no doubt that the lion would normally come out on top of that fight.

In reality, one would die during the fight and the other would probably die within a short time afterwards of the injuries it would receive.
