I don't think there's any substitute for in-person mentoring, but I suppose it's better than nothing.

It can if both parties are scrupulous about checking email and replying. I would recommend instant messaging over email, however. An IM tutoring session can get a lot more done in a much shorter length of time than sending emails back and forth. Just my opinion of course.
