Actually, IMHO, when the car was hit, the impact probably pinched and "shorted" the fuel gauge sending unit wire to ground. The only way to verify this is to begin disconnecting connectors that contain the sending unit wire. When the "shorted wire" is disconnected, the gauge will go to empty. You'll need a service manual for your vehicle (you can buy one at your local parts store) or have a reputable shop check it for you. Unless the fuel tank was badly deformed, I doubt that the float is stuck. HTH, Good Luck!!

The previous answers are correct. The float got stuck in a position and so what you may have to to is replace it. The hard part is that if the side is dented, then that might not be so easy. But all you have to do is locate the gas tank and find where the float would be, it's usually under the back seat. Then, just replace it. It shouldn't be too bad.

The impact probably jammed the float on the sending unit in the tank. If you can get at it, just tap it bith a piece of wood or something which doesn't ignite sparks. If not, you have to pull the tank and remove the sending unit. If that becomes the deal, I strongly recommend replacing the sending unit!

If the wire going to the tank is shorted it will keep the guage at full. You should probably pull the tank in any case to check for damage. Then it will be cheap and easy to get the sending unit out.

It seems that the sending unit for your fuel gauge got damaged and needs to be replaced. The fuel pump and sending unit is one whole part so you would need a new fuel pump.Good luck
