Pinchas Zukerman plays a 1740 Guarneri del Gesu violin that is called the "Ysaye"

The violin was named for violinist Eugene Ysaye (1858-1931). In fact, inside the violin is an inscription in red ink which (translated from French) reads: "This Del Gesu was the faithful companion of my career. Ysaye 1928."

When Ysaye died he was given a State Funeral in Belgium. The violin was carried on a pillow in the procession immediately preceding the violinists casket.

For 1965 - 1998 the violin was owned and played by Isaac Stern.

In 1998 the violin was acquired by the Nippon Music Foundation. Nippon Music Foundation is famous for acquiring famous stringed instruments and then lending them to virtuoso performers.

Interestingly, Pinchas Zukerman is also a conductor and a virtuoso violist. His wife is a cellist, and both his daughters are singers!
