I am 38 weeks pregnant and I feel that my husband has totally pulled away from me. I feel really alone right now. Is this a normal male behavior? This is the first kid and he has said that he is not sure what to do.

It may not be normal behavior in ALL men, but many do have worries about a new baby (good father, finances, etc.) and many can not express themselves very well so it appears that he may be pulling away... both of you need to be supportive to each other and keep communication open in a non-argumentative way. This is an important step for your futures so talk, talk, talk (but do not demand/argue as he may pull away further).

Good luck and I hope you have a great baby and a long happy life

38 weeks..1st kid..He may be feeling like it's crunch time. The pressure is on because he is realizing the baby is really going be here any time now. He may be feeling like he has something to prove to the rest of the world and himself..most guys-including myself- had a picture in their minds of what his life would be like when he becomes a father. In reality it never works out the way we plan, so we get the feeling like we're not ready yet. The last few weeks I was in a mad rush to "tie up loose-ends" or get as close as possible to being the guy I'm "supposed" to be. Once you get down to the last few weeks it hits you like a brick that getting to that point of "ideal" father would be impossible. Guys need time to compromise with themselves at this point and accept. No worries though the baby will get here and you will be great parents-for REAL

He's probably feeling a lot right now. He's probably scared, nervous, doubting himself etc. It can be kind of scary when you are having a baby because you don't really know how life can change, if you'll be a good parent, or whats totally in store for you. It's probably not about you but perhaps he is just trying to deal with being a first time dad and trying to sort through the millions of thoughs running through his head. Keep your chin up. I bet once the baby comes he'll change once again!

Is he upset about the baby? My husband didn't want kids, and he was pretty distant all the way through delivery. But one look at the baby, and he fell in love. He turned out to be the best father I know. He was totally different the second time.

Good luck to you. I'm sure he'll come around as soon as he sets his eyes on his beautiful child.

My husband's been pretty supportive throughout the whole pregnancy. However, he has had his share of being insensitive. I don't think men fully understand that our hormones are on a level all their own. Chances are, like you, he's feeling anxious and nervous and the soon to be arrival of your child. Where women want to talk about it and be held, men tend to pull away and attempt to deal with their emotions on thier own. Try talking to him about, but don't push. I'm sure once the baby gets here, he'll relax and come back around.

He's going through fear and insecurity. He probably doesn't want to hurt you or the baby. While his actions are misguided, he is not alone among husbands. What I did was to enlist the help of some experienced husbands / dads to encourage him.

He will get over it, regardless but I understand how hard that is to be at the end of your pregnancy and feel alone.

He is probably just scared and nervous about what is to come, which sucks because so are you and believe me you are dealing with a lot more!! The baby will be there very soon and Im sure he will start to warm up. Its hard but stick in there, women are much stronger than men!

This exact thing happened to my best girlfriend. She was alone for the latter part of her pregnancy because her boyfriend was scared and not sure what to do. It changed when the baby was born, and he saw that she really needed him. I don't think that men understand that we really need someone to help us out during those 9 months. I hope that things get better for you. Good luck, and congratulations on the new addition to your family!

Men internalize. He probably isn't pulling away so much as doubting himself, his ability to provide for you and the baby, his ability to be a father and he's probably scared to death. A baby changes you, your relationship, him and everything. It is normal for a man to be little distant and that doesn't mean he loves you and the baby any less. Excitement is something few men show but when that baby comes he'll be ok.
