First of all it depends upon the type of URL architecture that website is following.
Lets consider a general scenerio,in this a web site can have ur machine's IP address i.e web site can even track ur physical location. Because ur IP address carries ur network address, your host from which u r getting internet connection address and finally ur machine address.
Each address carries a mac address which is unique in whole world for every system.
This was all about the location of ur system.
Now, the website can track your whole session with the help of cookies which that website server saves into ur computer and that can be included in the URL through which u r accessing that website.
So website can track ur location, can track whatever u have downloaded from that site, can track how many times u have loged on that site.
This is the summarized info.

When you register a URL, that information becomes public knowledge. There are sites you can go to where you enter the URL and it tells you who registered it, name, address, etc. Any information that you gave while registering the URL is public information.

With the URL mostly nothing. However with your URL and a DNS you find the IP of your server. With the IP you can find your ISP and probably your town.

The link between the IP and the owner of this connection is however private. A company (say Norton) can't ask your ISP (say Cogeco) to give them your name even if Norton found that you downloaded their software illegally. They can however ask Cogeco to forward you a letter (by mail) asking you to stop.
