Here is the serious answer, although some are really funny: Most morning erections are caused by a full bladder. It is a signal your body sends your penis which in turn, with an erection, stops you from urinating. More scientifically: A morning erection that is naturally caused as the brains enters the REM-deep sleep phase. At this stage, the body's skeletal muscle structure relaxes and causes hypervasodilation in the capillaries of the body, resulting in said erection.

If the gentleman in question is waking up next to you, then perhaps you should accept it as a compliment.
Eckshually, Naomi, there is noting erotic about a morning thickness - they're a bloody nuisance. You can't do anything with them and taking the first pee in the morning usually means a long bloody wait or standing in the hallway with the dunny door open wide. Try explaining that next time you stay at Travelodge. You women have got it lucky.

Actually the morning erection has more to do with the urge to pee than anything else. After being asleep all night, your bladder is full or possibly overflowing and you need to relieve it. Thus even though urinating with an erection is difficult, the erection is kind of yoru body's way of telling you to head for the nearest urinal, toilet, tree or fire hydrant. In fact, even at other times of the day, when one feels an erection coming on, going for a pee often makes it subside quickly.

In the morning guys often wake up with a hard on.
· During the night guys get nocturnal erections, normally three to six. They don’t notice these because they are asleep.
· You only become aware of these nocturnal erections when you wake up with a ‘morning erection.’
· Girls who see their boyfriend awake with a hard on sometimes assume that he dreamt about sex and is turned on. But normally this is not the case. If you notice he has a morning erection you cannot draw any conclusions about his thoughts, feelings or desires. It’s comparable to a spontaneous erection.

Morning erections have nothing to do with a "full bladder." Men normally have erections when they are going through REM (rapid eye movement) sleep -- and this also is when they are dreaming. Men wake up at a time when they have been in REM sleep and still have some of the physiological effects of that sleep stage going on in their bodies, including hard, firm erections.
And the dreams men have just prior to waking up have no effect on their erections -- in other words, they don't have to be dreaming about sexual things to have morning erections.

It doesn't take an erotic dream to wake up my member in the morning. A stiff breeze will do it or humping the bed might too.

It has to do do with your nervous system and the nerves that feed your penis. erection is caused by a para-sympathetic dominant nervous state in other words when the nerves enter a relaxed state, the allow more blood to flow into you penis. so when you sleep you go from a sympathetic dominant nervous (sterssed) state to a para-sympathetic dominant (relaxed) state and presto morning stiffy! it is natures way of checking all is in order.

When you've neen asleep for a while your bladder is undoubtedly full. You brain can tell this so it wakes you up, but as you are still sleepy it gets confused and gives you an erection instead!

The real reason for this happening is: your bladder fills through the night. This puts pressure on your prostate gland therefore stimulating it and giving you an erection.
