It's negativity (and stupidity) on both sides of the aisle. For every Democrat that says the war can't be won, there's a Republican that says we're winning the war.
Politicians will say whatever they think they have to say to get re-elected. I personally don't believe wither side. Iraq is an illegal and unconstitutional war in which we're involved for only two very lame reasons: 1) The Bush family had a personal vendetta against Hussein ever since Desert Storm, and 2) Dick Cheney wants all that OIL swimming underneath Iraq's sands so that he and his Exxon-Mobil buddies can get richer and richer and richer.
We should have never invaded that sovereign nation, and especially under such false pretenses. Iraq had not threatened, provoked or attacked the U.S.A.; there were no weapons of mass destruction; and the U.S. certainly isn't interested in bringing democracy to that land of sand.
If we're really passionate about spreading democracy to all the dictatorships in the world, WHY aren't we invading the Sudan, and all the other countries ruled by demonic despots?
If we really believe we'll withdraw from Iraq by 2009, WHY is the U.S. building the largest embassy in the world on a 104-acre site in downtown Baghdad, overlooking the headquarters of the 'new' Iraqi puppet government which we installed? I'll give you a hint: we will not leave Iraq until we've sucked every drop of OIL out of that country.
Everyone in the Bush administration, as well as all 535 members of the most incompetent, contemptible, cowardly, arrogant, corrupt U.S. Congress in history, should be tried for high crimes against humanity in an international tribunal. If convicted, they should all face a public firing squad.
The U.S.A. has stooped to a new low by invading Iraq. Next on the Bush agenda: Iran. By spring, 2007, he'll invade Iran for the very same reason: all those rich fields of easily-accessible OIL.
Instead of reducing America's dependence on OIL, the Bush administration sees the profitability in stealing all the OIL it can. The 1.27 TRILLION DOLLARS we've spent on the Iraqi war (that's a million dollars a day for 3,487 years) could have gone toward repairing America's infrastructure; revitalizing our ailing education system; creating a nation-wide health care program; feeding the millions of homeless people, and children, in this country who go to bed hungry each night; or providing more money for social welfare programs.
But, no - those 'liberal' ideas are just to compassionate. The 'conservative' approach would be to spend those trillions of dollars on war-mongering that boosts the profits of the giant U.S. military-industrial complex and only serves to annihilate the world.
Democrats and Republicans alike have proven they are not capable of managing the federal government. It's time for an American Revolution. -RKO-

Excellent question.

The reason Democrats seem negative is that history has moulded the two major political parties into two "types". One type is essentially monied, and thus does not like to change things much (Who ever wants to change being a millionaire??) The other type history has moulded to an inclination to gain political power by appealing to the millions who are interested in change (the rather more poor or vulnerable, the minority, the aged, etc.). This latter type you recognize, of course.

Interestingly, this second type appeals to scholars and intellectuals. They too believe, because their minds attend to so much information about the world, that society needs to adapt and progress, to "change". This second type tends overwhelmingly to support the Democratic Party, not out of being really needful, but out of a conscientiousness that is borne of high quality education.

The party of the needy and wanting and conscientious is the party that is agreeable to change, and the party of change is the party inclined to complain (of course).

You are very wrong about Democrats not proposing anything positive that can be done! READ BOOKS AND ENCYCLOPEDIAS!! FDR did quite a lot with the New Deal. Harry Truman was the one who integrated the U.S. military. John Kennedy was the inspiration for the Peace Corps. Lyndon Johnson tried to actually end poverty in America (which failed, of cours, but at least he tried to emphasize the positive measures that could be undertaken). Jimmy Carter was the president who officially recognized China - in an effort to be "positive", and got the U.S. government to agree to cede the Panama Canal zone to Panama (which occurred in 2000). Bill Clinton miraculously balanced a wildly unbalanced federal budget (which I really still find hard to fathom).

Some people are not inclined to see or appreciate these things. Typically it is because mom and pop never recognized or appreciated them.

Ah, yes, you've attracted the propaganda whores of the left on this one. The Democrats have been dwelling on what can't be done since Vietnam (not just since GW Bush became president). When you begin with the mentality that America is always wrong and America's best days are behind it, then you will always dwell on the negative. The hard leftist dominated Democratic party believes both of those two things and acts accordingly. Modern "liberalism" and socialism are philosophies based on what can't be done. Since you can't make everyone equally wealthy or happy, you have to shift society downward so that everyone is equally POOR and UNHAPPY.

Democrats are not negative, they are some of the most optimistic people I know... They are realist though... and we can't win the war the way this President is prosecuting it, and we can't give The richest among us huge tax cuts and still balance the budget..It is a novel concept called Arithmetic and the math just does not work...I We are positive about many things, but we do not shine up a piece of fecies and call it a prize..It is still crap...Like this administration ans their Tsunami of corruption..
We are optimistic about one week from today winning the house and gaining a few seats in the senate... We believe in securing the border, We believe that helping the least among us is a great thing..I know another guy named Jesus who also considered it a good idea... We believe if you send our soldiers to die in Iraq it should be based on real evidence...not cooking the evidence to look the way we need it to for our war...Afghanistan a great war and we are 100% on board (they need the fight took to them).. Iraq however: It is the Republicans version of vietnam mutiplied times 10... The arithemetic thing I mentioned earlier will help you understand this concept....

All right have it your way
We can-
restore fairness to the tax system by decreasing taxes on the people who have the least amount of money to pay them and by increasing taxes on the only people who have no more need for money- DEAD PEOPLE! (return to the estate tax.)
We can-
Stop wasting the lives of our young people and do something positive to stop terrorism by calling a regional conference of all the major players in the Iraq debacle including Iran and saying. "Look we want to be out of here as much as you want to be. Just come up with a deal that does not leave you shooting at each other and sells us oil at a decent price and we go home. "
We can-
do a great deal once we stop wasting our time trying to bring democracy at the point of a gun to people who don't seem very grateful for it.

With the party's back against the wall, the Republican sleaze machine went into high gear this past week, appealing to the inherent racism, bigotry and homophobia that lie within GOP extremists, hoping that fear and ignorance will turn the tide in an election they can't win on truth or the issues. The Republican National Committee paid for a television ad in the Tennessee Senate Race, hoping that racial overtones can derail Democratic candidate Harold Ford by suggesting he chases white women and parties with Playboy centerfolds. "We made race an issue in Tennessee ," bragged one GOP political operative. "That always plays in our favor." Yes, it does. The Republican Party is so overrun with racists, bigots and homophobes that appealing to such stupidity always plays in their favor.
