There are 33. The bones in the spine are called vertebrae (ver-tea-bray). Beginning at the neck, there are 7 vertebrae in cervical (sir-vick-all) spine - 12 thoracic (thor-ah-sick) - 5 or 6 lumbar (lum-bar) - 5 sacrum (say-crumb) - 3 coccyx (****-six). The coccyx is the tailbone.

The spine has 25 joints connecting the 33 individual bones. And yes, we know the math doesn’t work. The bottom 4 bones of the spine are fused together to form the terminal vertebrae called the coccyx or tailbone – and the 5 bones above that are fused together to form the sacrum. And are caged within the bones of the pelvis.
Each bone in the spine is called a vertebra and they are grouped together to perform specific tasks.
The vertebrae are kept separate by disks of cartilage – effectively the cartilage stops the vertebrae in the spine grating on each other.

The spine, a row of 26 bones in your back, allows you to stand up straight and bend over. The spine also protects your spinal cord from being hurt. In people with spinal stenosis, the spine is narrowed in one or more of three parts:
The space at the center of the spine
The canals where nerves branch out from the spine
The space between vertebrae (the bones of the spine).
This narrowing puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves and can cause pain

The adult vertebral (spinal) column consists of 26 bones that are grouped as follows:
7 cervical vertebrae in the neck
12 thoracic vertebrae that articulate with the 12 pairs of ribs
5 lumbar vertebrae of the lower back
1 sacrum which is actually a fusion of 5 sacral vertebrae (fusion occurs from late teens to early 20's)
1 coccyx or "tailbone" which is a fusion of 4 coccygeal vertebrae
Intervertebral discs are located between adjacent vertebrae. These fibrocartilage discs form strong joints and absorb spinal compression shock.
Various spinal disorders include:
Herniated (slipped) disc - protrusion or rupture of an intervertebral disc
Scoliosis - exaggerated lateral bending of spinal column
Kyphosis - "hunchback" exaggerated thoracic curvature
Lordosis - "swayback" exaggerated lumbar curvature
Spina bifida - congenital defect with incomplete closure of the vertebral column
