I was listening to a comedian talk about it and it got me thinking. People (mainly Christians and Republicans) say they want to "PROTECT" marriage.... from what? PLEASE dont tell me what it says in the Bible, as there are many Americans (incl. most gays) who don't believe in the Bible. So how does a gay or lesbian couple getting married hurt straight couples or families? Straight people do a good enough job making marriage less "sacred"... just look at the divorce rate. How are gay people going to make that worse?
We dont need to increase the population, plus straight ppl make love for fun not just kids.
Please don't waste time saying stuff like "if men can marry other men, animals (or children) might be next". Get real; gay people are the same species, they're all human, consenting adults.
SO with all that in mind PLEASE tell me what the actual problem is!

Also it's still a one on one relationship, polygamy doesnt have anything to do with it.

rhsaunder brought up a very real fear, although not a very valid one, but quite real to those who fear it.
What most of these same people don't realize is that what we're SUPPOSED to have in this country is a seperation of church and state. Ironic since these are the very same people who are trying to force prayer into public schools, make laws which reflect ONLY their beliefs, insist that the laws of this land were based on their beliefs, and that only their beliefs should matter.
They're scared because they know they've had a choke-hold on politics and law for so long that they're terrified that it's bound to come back to bite them in their proverbial a*rses.
Sexy T on the same hand brings up a falicy that is laughable if nothing more.
Religious marriage is NOT the issue, although people like her and rhsaunders are attempting to make it so.
WE're still talking about LEGAL Marriage here, last time I checked.
Also, the last time I checked, laws weren't meant so much as to be broken, but to be changed to fit the times.
We've done this numerous times throughout our country's history. It's what the founding fathers expected would happen as we grew as a nation. They allowed for this in their forming a path, via legal amendments, to change laws to fit every citizen more appropriately.
Oh, and BTW there most certainly ARE churches and religions which DO recognize and sanctify gay unions. I do hope I don't have to go through the list one by one again.

"In all these cases it was brought about to keep a family together and protect children.
Why do Gays feel the need for marriage? There are no children of the paring to protect."
Well this reasoning doesn't really work as there are many married couples that do not, and will not, ever have kids. Do they not have the right to be married?
Second of all, gay couples do have children. They do have families. So by your same reasoning they should be allowed to be married.

Marriage is not a Christian institution it has been around way before then and features in many religions and tribal beliefs.
In all these cases it was brought about to keep a family together and protect children.
Why do Gays feel the need for marriage? There are no children of the paring to protect.
In most countries Gays now enjoy civil partnerships giving the same legal rights as a marriage would. Why Oh why do gays want to copy marriage. Would it not be far more sensible to venerate this civil partnership instead of trying to copy hetrosexuals?
You want to be different - Great. Why not make a civil partnership uniquely your own and make it much stronger and worthwhile than hetro marriage is today?

People are afraid of things they don't understand. And most of these people that are against this, have been raised in a very closed minded family and have passed their beliefs down through the years. They are afraid to think different, or god forbid even approach the subject in conversation for worry about what others (family and friends) will think of them. So, they continue with the same thought pattern that they were taught by their fathers and grandfathers, and continue to teach it to their kids because thats all they know.
In my house, someone elses lifestyle is their own business and we don't choose to like or dislike them because of it. If it doesnt effect us in a bad way, then we don't worry about it. Everyone of us is a human with the same feelings. No body has the right to judge anyone else, unless you can walk on water or return from the dead.
These are just my thoughts on it and I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
Have a safe and fun Halloween !!!!!

I agree... if I marry my girlfriend, how does that affect a straight couple's marriage? It doesn't, and the last I checked, this country stood for liberty and justice FOR ALL.... where's my liberty to get married and the justice to have it protected under the laws of the United States... in the last few years, the United States have become quite UnUnited... SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE....
Oh, and for all those who used the old "children, animals, and polygamy is next" routine, myself and my girlfriend are both loving, consenting adults who only want each other, not our dog, not the neighborhood kiddies, or anyone else for that matter.

I completely agree with you. They see nothing wrong with the high divorce rate between straight couples, but two adults that love each aren't supposed to be recognized civilly as a married couple just because their the same sex. So if a couple has been together for 40 years, and one of them is on life support, legally their partner is not allowed to have any say in medical decisions. All because people want to protect the "sanctity" of an institution that is already pretty much a joke among straight people anyway.

Due to many people who are afraid of changes, gay marriage is being pulled back and forth in that argument. Many so-called Christians believe that the marriage should be with a man and a woman, but times change. People have to open their minds and let go this hatred, and embrace it. Because this won't change.

It should not be a problem, in fact gay marriage was allowed in the bible.Jonathan and David were married in the Bible (1 Samuel 18:1, 3 - 4).
Here, I'll quote it - "And it came to pass, when he had made an end of
speaking unto Saul that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David
and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Then Jonathan and David made a
covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself
of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even
to his sword and to his bow and to his girdle." and also Ruth's relationship
with Naomi is suspect, (Ruth 1:16-17) "And Ruth said to Naomi, Entreat me not
to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest,
I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people,
and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried:
the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part three and me.
so really christian religieon allows gay marriage. Thank you " Everybody still loves chris" I would have never known about it.

I agree with David M. I don't care if anyone calls it marriage or has it ok'd with a god that I don't worship. I just want to be able to get the benefits for my partner that any other hetero person can get for theirs. We are going to have children so I want to be able to protect them from any outside influences. It is so hard leagally to keep a gay family together if something happens to one of the parents. I don't care what anyone calls it, I just want the right to protect my family.
