I clean mine up good, removing crusted spots and rust. season it well with Crisco shortening and put in a 350 oven for 2 hours. Turn the oven off and leave the pot in overnight.
I've used this for very old pots and pans as well as new unseasoned ones. Both work well.

Wash the pot well with soap and water and then dry it thoroughly. Then get a piece of steel wool and gently scrub away any rust spots. Turn your oven on its lowest setting and let it heat up a bit. Get some olive oil (cheap stuff) and begin to lightly apply it to the pot with a folded paper towel. Work it over the metal as if you were polishing wood, making sure the metal has a "shine" to it, but insuring that no liquid is dripping. Once the entire pot is coated, place it into the over for about an hour. Then turn off the oven and remove. It should be smooth to the touch and dark. If not, re-oil and repeat.
You will need to re-oil from time to time to prevent rust.

I love cast iron! Make sure its rust free, scrub it with an SOS pad or something similar. Once its clean, wipe it dry and coat it all over with vegetable oil and bake it in the oven on low heat 250 degrees F for about 20 mins.should do it.Then turn oven off and leave it in while it cools off. Next! Never clean it with soap again! Rinse it in hot water and sponge it clean, then dry it over the stove.Let it cool and you are back in business! Enjoy!

First make sure it is rust free my getting it sand blasted, a local memorial (tombstone) place is good for this, then immediately lube it with oil after wards, then place in a 325f degree oven until black, making sure it is plenty oiled up.
never clean with soap, only hot water and never leave water standing in it..
