This is the Astronomy and Space section. Who told you that we count years? Heck, we don't even count months or weeks. In this group, we use the Astronomical Julian Day. No need to count years, and this is the basis used to convert between all of the other calendar systems used in the world.

Today is day number 2454040.

See? No bothering with years, weeks, months, etc. If you really DO want to know what day of the week it is, day 0 was a Monday, so divide the day number by 7 and check the remainder to see whether it's Friday yet.

in fact, a monk made a mistake in the 12th century when calculating the date of Jesus's birth. He was called by the Holy Church to explain the error, but since they would have to change all the books written that far to correct the dates, they agreed to keep that mistake, but knowing about the error.
He put the Jesus's birthday six years ago than the real year, so we should now be on 2012 of the Christianic era.

It is 2549 BE (Buddhist Era) in Thailand. It all depends on what calendar you choose to use. Any year can be the starting point, it does not mean that is the start of the world.

Similarly, 2012 will not be the end of the world just because a Mayan calendar ends that year.

Not everybody does. Western society (that is, the society that grew up in Europe) just agreed to pick an arbitrary year, and call it year number 1. This year is 2,005 years later.

But in the Jewish calendar (which, acccording to tradition, starts with the beginning of the world) the year is 5766.

The current Islamic year - dating from the traditional date of the Prophet's birth - is 1427.

Gregorian, Julian, Islamic, Jewish and Chinese calendars have different ways of calculating years (dates).

2006 is used in the Gregorian calendar and starts after the death of Jesus.

Because if you started saying October 31, 4,500,325,236 (and I may be off by, give or take, 500 million years), people might accuse you of being pedantic. (giggles)
