I am accessing internet through GPRS and of late my system (laptop) is shutting down automatically. some one suggested i must get hard disk checked as it is making some sound while active. But this problem (shutting down) does not occur while using laptop for other work (other than internet). I also had doubts about the the antivirus as well as if it is not causing the system to shut down. Also I am not get internet faster (not more than 2-3 KBPS) though internet provider indicates speed of 115kbps. I have IE 7 on my system downloaded from the MS site. kindly help.

Download and install the following:
Ad-Aware ( www.lavasoft.com )
Spybot ( http://safer-networking.org/ )
AVG Antivirus ( free.grisoft.com/ )

If your problem doesnt stop after you run these then it is probably a disk problem and I would suggest getting Norton Disk Doctor.

Most of the time if you are getting mysterious reboots, it is hardware related. The laptop is overheating, and so it shuts down to prevent damage to the processor and system board. Normally is NOT hard drive related.

Make sure any fans are clean and have good air flow. Blow out with compressed air.

Something else to try: Control Panel. System Icon. Go to the Advanced page and click the Start up and Recovery button. If the Automaticly Restart option is check, uncheck it. You may be getting some kind of a program error that is causing the reboot. Unchecking this will NOT resolve the error, but it should cause Windows to DISPLAY the error, rather then reboooting. Once you have the error, then you can work at resolving it.

Hope that helps...

To check your hard drive go to: Start/Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt
Type on the line :" CD .. " until goes to the root " c:\ "
On the line type : " CHKDSK " ( your command line under DOS must look like : " C:\chkdsk ")
Pres "Enter" .At the end of the scan disk process you'll see the result. BUT I'm afraid your problem is not you disk. You've got "something" from the net. I will recommend you first of all to disconnect your computer from the net and to run, after, a good Antivir/Spy program. First of all you need to discover what you've got and after to find the best way to remove it and clean your computer.
Good Luck
