it says only dvd rom on my drive, so which format shall i buy discs, dvd-rw or dvd+rw

you need a dvd writer, if it says dvd rom, it can only play them

If your dvd drive just says dvd-rom then thats what it is it will play a dvd or cd but you can not copy a dvd or cd using it . You need a dvd-r or rw . If you get one of them you cancopy your films on either - or + disks depending on what your dvd home player will except some take either

DVD rom is a third type,its different from dvd+ and dvd- .

If you have Nero you can run a drive test. If you still cant find out if it takes +rw buy -rw as this is sanctioned media and +rw is not.
