This sounds like it is a homework question. You should learn how to do this yourself. Draw 2 circles the same size divide one up into 7 pieces (like pie) the other divided in to eight. Shade 4 pieces on one and five on the other, which has more of the pie shaded that the other? You will be able to tell which is bigger by the bigger shaded area.

First, find the Least Common Denominator, so that you can compare the fractions on equal terms. What is the smallest number that is divisible by both 7 and 8? It's 56.
Next, figure out the appropriate numerators you need to make 56 the denominator for each of the fractions in question. So 4/7 is also equal to 32/56, and 5/8 is also equal to 35/56.
Now since the fractions are just unsimplified versions of the original fractions, and are uniquely identifiable in common terms.
So, since 35/56 is greater than 32/56, it's corresponding equivalent is greater, 5/8.

You make the denominators the same by figuring out the lowest common multiple. In this case its 56, right?
so, 4 x 8 = 32 5 x 7= 35
---- ----- & --- ----
7 x 8 56 8 x 7 56
Therefore, you know that 5/8 is larger!! Have fun.

In order to see which one's bigger, make them have a common denominator (in this case it'd be easy just to make them be fractions over 56).
Then:
4/7 = 32/56
5/8 = 35/56
Now you should be able to see which of the fractions is the biggest

If you're doing homework without a calculator, it's easiest to just find a common denominator:
4/7 = 32/56
5/8 = 35/56

Well what you need to do is work out what each one of these is as a decimal. 4 divided by seven equals 0.571. Five divided by eight equals 0.625. Therefore 5/8 is larger. How easy was that?!!
