Actually, I thought the Pandora snapped the box shut on Hope. By keeping it trapped in the box, she allowed humanity to keep it in their hearts. This way, when people were attacked by all the bad things she let out of the box, they could still hope things would get better and that would carry them through the bad times.

Pandora only had one box. When she opened it, a lot of evil spirits came out, but the last one to come out was the Spirit of Hope.

Two versions of the story, though - some believe hope is the great evil that escaped the box, others believe the lack of hope is the great evil that escaped the box. I can see it either way.

Hope was not contained in the box in the first place. It was what stood to be lost by what was almost released. The actual spirit not released was that of foresight.
