Most clinics will generally want to see a pregnant woman around 8 weeks because of one very disturbing fact. Between 20 to 40% of women will miscarry before 8 weeks.

Eight weeks is somewhat of a milestone in that if you make it that far, the chance of miscarriage drops significantly. So, as a rule, most OB clinics don't start prenatal care until 8 weeks.

Despite what you hear from others, there is nothing that can be done before eight weeks that can decrease the rate of miscarriage. That's because most miscarriages that occur before 8 weeks are due to significant chromosomal anomolies. These anomolies are incompatible with life and the body "rejects" that pregnancy.

Now, having said all that, if you really wanted to be seen before 8 weeks, I don't think any reputable clinic would refuse, but we generally have to tell our patients that there is still a chance of miscarriage at that time.

If you have had at least one positive result to a pregnancy test, then you are most definitely pregnant. So, you should go ahead and make that appointment. The main reason I say this is to get started on the prenatal vitamins, and your doctor will need to have some lab work done on you that is important for you and the baby later down the line. There's not any urgency, but I would say at your earliest convenience to call and make an appointment.

If you got any positive results on a pregnancy test, then get to your OBGYN ASAP. False positive results are rare. I'm glad you are already taking prenatal vitamins, but you need to seek early prenatal care as well. Your OBGYN can do a blood pregnancy test, which not only detect the hcg hormone in your body, but will also tell the level of hcg hormone.

Now - if you even got one positive, you are pregnant.
